BLACK DIAMOND DESIGN CHALLENGE
SPRING 2023 | JUNIOR STUDIO
During the spring semester of 2023, I was tasked with designing several products that would fit in the Black Diamond product offering. We were given a brief and two weeks to complete each project.
In an effort to better understand the Black Diamond brand, I visited the Outdoor Recreation Archive at Utah State University to study the heritage of the brand and pinpoint the ways their aesthetic has stayed consistent over time.

Project 1:
THE WASATCH DRESS
The emphasis focus given for this concept was Form and Style.
PROJECT BRIEF:

UNDERSTANDING USER:
Meet Kay

IDENTIFIED OPPORTUNITY:

A dress that can transition seamlessly from work to play.
MEETING CTQ'S:

CONCEPT IDEATION:

INTEGRATING BRAND AESTHETIC:
I incorporated this pocket style into the dress design to align with Black Diamond’s signature blocky pockets found on many of their pant styles to ensure the dress feels authentic to the brand.

FINAL CONCEPT:

Project 2:
ARTHRITIS FRIENDLY SKI MITT
The focus given for this concept was Function and Performance.
PROJECT BRIEF:

HOW MIGHT WE SUPPORT THOSE WITH ARTHRITIS IN THEIR COLD WEATHER OUTDOOR PURSUITS?
BODY-STORMING:
To simulate joint pain and stiffness, I taped my joints to understand and feel the stiffness and difficulty in basic tasks, such as gripping a water-bottle lid.

FUNCTION AND PERFORMANCE:
Through interviews with friends and family that struggle with arthritis, reddit posts, and reviews on existing products, I narrowed down the helpful and beneficial characteristics of arthritis products.

MARKET ANALYSIS:

CONCEPT IDEATION:

I focused on blending the pain-relieving capabilities of a compression glove with a technical and warm outer mitten that aesthetically would fit in the Black Diamond product offering.
